In light of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak around the world, the restricted areas for entering Japan have been expanded. For the latest info, please check the JNTO Coronavirus advisory page. A list of closed attractions across the country can be found at the page above or the Visit Japan account on Tripadvisor.
We recommend visiting the relevant official websites or contacting the Japan Visitor Hotline (+81 50 3816 2787), available in English, Chinese and Korean, for regular updates on the latest information. You may also find the JNTO Chatbot useful to obtain direct contact details for specific organizations.
Greetings from the Japan Online Media Center!
Launched by the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO), the Japan Online Media Center (JOMC) is a multimedia archive of tourism-oriented photos and footage for use by overseas media publications. This newsletter series was created by JOMC to help you stay up to date and informed about all the latest news and events happening within Japan’s tourism scene.
What does JOMC offer?
JOMC users can download and edit free images and footage by completing a simple registration process. The site is open to media, travel trade partners, and government officials. Currently, the JOMC free content library contains around 14,000 items. The site features convenient functions allowing users to select different file sizes to suit various purposes, bulk download multiple assets, and obtain prepackaged image and video materials combined with text data that are ready for use in articles and videos. Other resources available on JOMC include tourism statistics, press releases, digital brochures, e-learning materials, and lists of domestic travel agencies.

With a wealth of media-ready content and in-depth information, JOMC is a great resource for members of the media looking for both visual content and additional information about Japan not found elsewhere in English. All the content on the site is up to date and has been specially crafted to suit the needs of busy writers, editors, and content creators.
This special content library aims to help members of the media find material on topics for coverage. Images and videos are carefully selected in line with seasonal topics and fresh themes, and prepackaged with text.
A recent featured article shone a spotlight on Japan’s beloved cherry blossoms (or sakura in Japanese). Fleeting and fragile, cherry blossoms are a key cultural motif, embodying the wabi-sabi philosophy of the beauty of impermanence and signifying rebirth. Find valuable information on the history and traditions of cherry blossom festivals, as well as downloadable photos.
Voyapon is a popular website dedicated to Japanese culture and lifestyle. It’s read by travelers visiting Japan and local ex-pats wanting to know more about current events. The website uses JOMC assets for their feature articles. We asked Voyapon about their experience using JOMC assets for their recent article titled Hina Matsuri: A Day of Celebration For Girls.
Q: Can you tell us about the assets you utilized?
A: To write an article about the traditional Hinamatsuri (“doll festival”), I used ten pictures of hina dolls. It was immediately before the cherry blossom season, so I also used three pictures of cherry trees.
Q: Why did you decide to use the assets offered on JOMC?
A: Because the pictures are good quality without looking overly commercial, which makes them easier to use in articles written by amateurs without looking out of place.
Q: When creating travel content, do you find JOMC’s assets useful?
A: There are many photos of lesser-known locations, which are the more difficult ones for us to get access to personally.
