River and ocean cruise line Viking is heading for the Great Lakes.
As it announced details of its new ‘Viking Expeditions’ ships, the line said it will begin Great lakes itineraries from 2022.
The Viking Octantis is currently under construction and will offer Great Lakes trips between April and October.
For the remainder of the year it will sail the Arctic.
The ship accommodates 378 guests in 189 staterooms.
It is one of two new custom-designed Polar Class 6 ships.
The other is named Viking Polaris and will cover both polar regions.
“Our guests are curious explorers. They want to continue traveling with us to familiar destinations, but they would also like to travel further,” said Viking chairman, Torstein Hagen.
The expedition ships will have two yellow submarines, each capable of accommodating six passengers.
Octantis will offer three different Great Lakes eight-day itineraries as well as 13-day New England and Canada cruises.
Ports of call include Duluth, Milwaukee, Thunder Bay, Mackinac Island and Traverse City, Michigan.
