Hawaii imposes 14-day self-isolation on all arrivals
Hawaii Gov. David Ige signed an emergency order which forces all travelers to undergo self-quarantine for 14 days.
It takes effect from March 26 and has strict penalties for violations.
Anyone flouting the order could face a $5,000 fine and/or up to a year in prison.
“With the majority of Hawaii’s covid-19 cases linked to travel, it is critical that we further mitigate the spread of the virus by both residents and visitors who are coming from out-of-state,” Ige said.
“This plan was developed in collaboration with our county mayors and Hawaii’s business, community and visitor industry leaders.”
It also applies to returning residents who must isolate at home.
Visitors must quarantine in their hotel room or rented accommodation.
“These actions are extreme, but they will help flatten the curve and lay the groundwork for a quicker recovery. We need everyone to comply with these quarantine orders to help protect Hawaii’s residents,” Ige said.
According to Hawaii’s department of health, the state has 56 cases of coronavirus infection.
