The traditional free-for-all buffet will likeley be off the menu when Royal Caribbean sets sail again.
A new normal of enhanced health and safety on ships will see the end of self-serve dining, at least in the short term.
President and CEO Michael Bayley said there will be changes to the buffet when the line starts sailing again.
“I think in the beginning, there will not be a buffet, that’s how I see it,” Bayley said during a virtual call with senior vice president Vicki Freed.
“We will utilize the space, we will utilize the Windjammer (buffet venue) but in all probability, it won’t be a classical buffet. It will be something more akin to a restaurant.”
The Covid-19 pandemic could well be the end of the road for the traditional buffet in its present form – on both cruise ships and in hotels.
That would undoubtedly lead to less choice, potentially higher prices – or both.
Royal Caribbean and all other cruise lines are still waiting out the end of the CDC ‘no sail’ order which is due to end in mid-July.
