Uber Australia is piloting a first-ever car rental service in selected cities.
The aim is to get the tourism market moving again by encouraging people to embark on road trips.
Uber Rent allows users to book rental cars via the Uber app in partnership with CarTrawler.
It launched in Brisbane and will be rolled out in Sydney, Gold Coast, Melbourne, Perth and Adelaide starting from next week.
“Because this is a completely new product for Uber and hasn’t been trialled internationally before, we want to see what the response is like before we expand it to more cities,” Uber said.
Like most traditional rental services, vehicles can be picked up and dropped off at different locations, making inter-state trips possible subject to state border openings.
“As we see more positive signs of recovery globally and easing of travel bans, it’s important we enable people to move again. We see car rental as more relevant than ever,” said CarTrawler CCO Aileen McCormack.
The ‘Rentals’ option is available to users in the selected cities once they update the app.
Users will also earn Uber Rewards points by using the car rental service, with a point for every dollar spent.
