Tomorrow is theDay of Portugal, Camões, and the Portuguese Communities. June 10 is Portugal Day, a national holiday and celebrated by Portuguese people around the world. It commemorates the death of poet and literary icon Luís de Camões who died on June 10, 1580. Luís de Camões is considered to be the greatest poet of Portugal – and the Portuguese language, comparable to Shakespeare, Vondel, Homer, Virgil and Dante. While Camões is known for his drama and poetry, he is best known for his masterpiece Os Lusíadas (The Lusiads). So influential is his epic that Portuguese is sometimes called the “language of Camões”.
