Ask around, and you’ll find that many people you know have a fear of flying. It might be a slight worry every time they have to board a plane, or it might be something huge that prevents them from ever flying anywhere due to the terror and the fact that it brings on panic attacks.
Anyone who has a fear of flying will undoubtedly have heard someone tell them that it’s far safer to fly than it is to drive. However, that information only helps if it’s true. Let’s look into it a little more and discover if there is any fact behind the idea that flying is safer than driving.
Although sometimes it’s possible to skew statistics in someone’s favor one way or the other, there is no need to do this when it comes to flying versus driving. There is a one in 98 chance of being involved in a car accident, whereas there is a one in 7,178 chance of being involved in a plane crash. These figures are looked at over a lifetime, not a single journey. It’s clear then that if you are traveling by plane, you are much safer in terms of the potential for an incident than if you drive. The fact that we get into our cars every day without thinking
and yet struggle to book a plane ticket just shows how prevalent the idea of a plane crash is. This isn’t because they happen often; in fact, it’s the opposite. They are so rare that when one does occur, it makes the news. Car accidents happen every day and don’t (usually) make the news. So although it’s safer to be in a plane, we are told about plane crashes more than car accidents, making air travel seem unsafe.
You should also consider airports. At an airport, you have dedicated security checking all the bags and the people. You even have safe places to park your car, so if you need ATL airport parking, for example, you can be sure that, when you return from your trip, your car will be just as you left it. Over recent years, airport security has improved hugely, and it’s now virtually impossible to take anything onto a plane that shouldn’t be there, and that could cause harm. This is not the case with cars. Anyone can put anything into their car and use it in any way they want to. They could cause untold damage with their weapons or other items, and there is no security to stop them. Cars are private vehicles, and as such, we can do what we want with them. It’s clear that being on a plane that has been thoroughly checked along with people who have been through security is safer than driving.
It’s fine to be scared of something, and in many cases, these fears are irrational, so facts and figures like we have stated above may not change someone’s mind or help them overcome their fear of flying. However, if it has helped just one person realize that flying is their best option and that fear isn’t necessary, that’s a good thing.Follow and Share with Jetsettersblog.
